Gratitude Letter

It happens too often in our lives that we take for granted the wonderful people and the wonderful things they do for us. It is hard for many, like myself, to properly express the gratitude felt deep down. A simple “thank you” does not equate to the amazing things you have done for me, so this letter is my attempt at writing down (or typing, rather) a proper thank-you. Although no matter how hard I try, words will never be enough, I think it will show a small fraction of my gratitude. Mom, this is for you.

First, foremost, and most obvious, I’d like to thank you for my life. You could have made other choices so that I would not even be here today, but you kept me and loved me with your entirety, which I am forever grateful for. You also carried me in your body for nine months, keeping both you and me healthy, which also did not necessarily have to be done. You could have gave me away to somebody else the moment I was born. As terrible and probably ridiculous as all of these scenarios may sound, they are some peoples’ realities, and I am grateful that you did not allow them to be mine. I am proud of the woman I am today, and I would not be this woman if it were not for you, so, I thank you.

You have made many sacrifices for me and my well-being which I will never be able to repay. From the emotional support which I so often need, to the financial support to get me through college, you have gotten me through so many situations where nobody else could have possibly helped. When I am stressed out, you are always there with a shoulder to cry on to make me better again. I have no idea where I would be without your constant support, so I thank you.

I definitely haven’t always been the ideal daughter to raise. I have made some questionable choices, hung around some questionable people, and have been put into some questionable situations. I could have ended up getting caught up in these questionable acts and ended up being an entirely different person, which you probably were worried about a few times. The reason I came out from all of the negativity a better, stronger, more positive person is because of you. You are such a strong woman, and I admire that. Your strength has made me a stronger person, so I thank you.

I have made and lost many, many friends throughout my lifetime, but one friend has always remained by my side- you, my best friend. When I feel upset about these lost friendships, you are always my voice of reason getting me through the tough times. When I need somebody to talk to or be goofy around, you are always there. When it’s 2 AM and I can’t sleep, you’re with me to calm me down until I sleep (or keep me awake watching Food Network and making jokes all night), so I thank you.

Words could never measure the sacrifices, the smiles, the tears, and the support you’ve given me all of these years. I never feel like I thank you enough, so I wrote this letter as a small attempt at doing the impossible: properly thanking you for all that you’ve done for me. I love you, and I am so grateful to have you as a mom. Thank you.
